Why do we eat when we're not really hungry?
It may seem obvious that we'd know when we're hungry, know when we're not hungryand know when we're no longer hungry.
But, in our culture, where there's a more than adequate food supply, genuine hunger is something we rarely experience.
So, we often identify any desire to eat with actual hunger.
We might see food that makes our mouth water, and we think we're hungry.
We may realize that we haven't eaten for a couple of hours or that it's the time we usually have a meal or a snack, and that makes us think we're hungry.
But, following every urge to eat with the actual consumption of food soon becomes a habit...the habit of overeating.

Why do we eat when we're upset?
For a long time now, your subconscious (that part of your mind that you're not aware of) may have been responding to emotional needs with a desire for food.
One of the most important things we're going to do in our sessions is change your subconscious responses to these feelings and connect them to other ways that you can satisfy your need for enjoyment, fulfillment or relief from everyday stress, by looking for other pleasurable activities ... by thinking about something else you could enjoy doing ... something that doesn't involve food!
